Hike No 26 Circuit Hikes in SNP PATC 14th Edition
Hike No 49 Afalconguide Hiking Shenandoah
Length 8.4 miles...

Hikers.. 32oz   Himaintenance.. Andy from the Richmond Times-Dispatch  and 9 others hikers from Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club

Note to self.. NEXT TIME DON"T FORGET YOUR CAMERA...

The trail head for this hike is MP 83 on skyline drive.  From there we took the AT north approximately 3.5 miles to the Doyles River Trail.  I was already pissed at myself for leaving my camera at home and the sites didn't help to ease my 'pissed offedness'.  Flowers in bloom and hundreds of butterflies would not be captured on film.  At some points 20 butterflies were clustered together.  The AT crosses Skyline drive 3 times in the first 3 miles. On the way up we saw a white tail deer as well as the distinctive markings of a pileated woodpecker.

We then hit the junction with Doyles River trail and started our decent.  The trail was in good shape, pretty wet from recent rains, but that meant the falls were gushing.  We passed the trail to the PATC cabin with HM myself and one other person in advance.  The 3rd person stopped to wait on the rest while HM and I continued on.  3 minutes later, we came around a bend and I froze.. There no more then 100 feet in front of us was a mother bear and a cub, right in the middle of the trail.  She looked at as and we at her, before she slowly lumbered off with the cub following.  This was HM's first encounter with a bear and she was extactic. ...and me without my camera..........

We proceeded until the next falls and waited for the rest of the group.  At that point we told Andy what he had missed and suggested he stay up with us.  We continued on and came to another bend in the trail.  Andy HM and I were way out in front. All of a sudden from behind us we heard 'snake, snake'.  Apparently, we had disturbed a rattle snake on the side of the trail who decided to show its displeasure with the 4th person to stride by. We retraced out steps and sure enough, there it was, curled up in the leaves....  and me without my camera...........

We ate lunch near the bottom of Doyles River Trail before making out assent up the Jones Run Trail... There are a few falls on this trail, with the most majestic being up at the top... Again, due to the recent rain, they were flowing pretty good.  We arrived back at our vehicles approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes after we left.

This is a fairly easy hike, but it is a beautiful one.  As with most hikes in SNP that originate from Sky Line Drive, there is a decent followed by an accent.  By doing the hike in this direction, the return isn't quite as steep.

Andy's article on the ODATC and this Hike will appear in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Friday...

I'm so dissapointed you couldn't tell the difference.  You're hiking behind me all weekend just to make sure THAT never happens again.
