I never caught minnows, but maybe you can try a net to catch some bigger ones.  That's a cool idea with the waterbottle.

Maybe you can try some bigger bottles and see what happens. Maybe some gallon jugs.

i am thinking that i would like to find one of your minnow traps and see if i can catch some bigger ones.  what do you bait them with?

the bass really really like the minnows.  they spit out all the other bait i use.  i get paid on the 1st and 3rd of the month, i'll budget and see what's left over.  Brian needs some tackle too.

Cabela's sells a wire mesh minnow trap for $9.99.  There are some plans on the internet to make your own too.  Some people use dry dog food for minnow bait, but one guy said his minnows stay alive longer using chicken livers, crab or canned dog food as bait in the trap.  He claims bread or dry dog food expands in the minnows stomach and kills them.  I have no idea if that's true.

caught two bass last night!  i set up three of my little bottle traps and had plenty of minnows all night long.  i'm using a smaller hook so the tinier minnows are living longer on it.  problem is that the bass are easily able to take the bait and i had quite a few get away.  i've learned not to set the hook until he is really swimming away with my line.

i never did find plans for the trap you spoke of, but i looked at two at the Cabelas website.  the only plans i found on the web were for bottle traps, some of them were better than mine and i'm thinking on that.  i think for now i will just improve the bottle traps i already have since they are free.

That's great that your are catching some bass.  I didn't catch a bass in years, but I haven't been out fishing for them either.  We used to use Hula poppers to catch them at night.

One plan I found on the internet said how to make a trap with screen, but it didn't show any pictures.

I find a lot of peace in fishing too.  I just wish we'd get some rain to bring the streams back up.  I'd like to get in more fishing before the season ends.  I missed a lot of fishing days this spring and didn't get out as much as I'd like.

Rich, were do you live that the streams are that down?  I have to admit that I'm always surprised that this little river runs as well as it does considering how dry it is here.  I guess it has a lot of feeders.

Btw, chicken livers were a bust, neither the minnows nor the bass liked them.  My fishfood flakes are gone so I saved the last 20 minnows I caught for today.  I only caught one fish yesterday, a catfish, small one, prolly about 8 inches.

I watched a show on TV about big catfish and biggest in the world live in Cambodia.  They said they can get over 6 feet long.  That's a lot of catfish! I've never used chicken livers, just read about them. I remember using leeches to bass fish and that was a long time ago.  Since I started fly fishing streams, I just use flies.
I live in Northeastern PA.  We haven't had a good rainfall in several weeks so it has been dry. The fish get spooked with the water this low.  The Central part of the state has some limestone streams that remain high enough to fish all year, but that's a long ride from here just to fish for the day.

a mountain lion watching me from accross the river while i was night fishing last night.  i thought about the two shallow crossings not further than 75 yards away, one above and one below me.  he stayed there and crouched for the longest time.  i stood up, he stood up, i left when he left.  i packed up and walked away slowly praying that he wasn't going for the crossing.  that was the prickliest feeling ever.

I took the canoe out on a local lake to do a little fishing. On my first cast I caught a nice sized pike and thought, oh yea this is going to be good day. I didn't catch anything else the rest of the day. I still had a good time paddling around the lake on a beautiful day.

Went up to Cedar River Flow for the long weekend and fished the bends in the river.  Caught 15 brook trout almost all in the 12 - 15 inch range.  Saw a nice 18"+ brookie, but it saw me first and got spooked and wouldn't hit anything.  Over all a good weekend with perfect weather.
