No, the local farm co-op orders them every spring.  Although I'm early in to this, so far it has been much more fun than I imaginedL)
It (the source) also recommends dabbing vaseline on their combs and wattles to keep them from freezing, becoming infected and breaking off.Lol
who knew?  this place is a wealth of info.  How does vaseline help circulation?...or is it just for topical moisture reduction?......next up..

Wouldn't ruffle my feathers none.

I awoke and couldn't be certain the chicks had enough water and food, so I got dressed and went down to the basement.  Good thing I did, because Les left the basement door open last night...the cat.  There were bloodied bodies everywhere....not.  He did leave the door open, but evidently the cat just didn't care.  Close call.  So, I filled their food pan and water dish and now they're good for the next day.

That's your early morning poultry report:)

Man, you were lucky you have a well-fed cat...that was a close call...I would have hated to read about bloodied bodies...

I can just see the chicks escaping their box, flooding up the stairs and pooping all over Nimble's house.

Nice avatars, Pamma:)  If any of my chickens get a trail name and decide to post, they will choose one of those:)

Chicken report is all positive.  Everyone is well and about twice the size of two weeks ago.  I replaced their heat lamp bulb with one that is red.  It's less glaring for their beady little eyes and, in theory, they'll peck each other less.  Maybe the roosters will think they're in a house of ill repute (they are, but don't know it).

I've got to get that cage finished and soon.  Only two more weeks and the coop must be ready.  So much to do...and canoe shuttling starts today.

when do you get to eat them?

This reminds me of an intricate plan we devised on a camping trip I took right after watching fly away home.  The plan was to get a bunch of eggs and imprint my face on the chicks when they hatched so they would think I am their mother.  then raise them to follow me everywhere I went.  Then to take them backpacking so that I could have fresh meat for dinner every night and eggs for breakfast without having to carry the food in my pack.

admittedly, I don't know much about chickens, but I think it will work.
