What a great story.  Sounds like a gold mine for photos!

So what is HSR?

Cool story Q.

It triggered similar memories of a corner store I lived across the street from. It was called John's. I still have vivid memories of the "ice" truck coming by every week or so. Those guys would use these big menacing pincer type devices to haul the dry ice from the truck into the store. That was an event in itself. But as kid, I couldn't wait until my Nana would give me a nickel or if things were really good that day she'd give me a quarter. Jackpot! I loved my Nana. After the coin was safely secured in the grips of my tiny hand, I'd then run across the street as if my hair was on fire. I'd bust through the door and stand there for a moment in awe as if I just stepped into Mr Magorium's Magical Emporium. Wide Eyed! Only a few seconds would tick by whilst scanning the various options. Should I get a home made fountain soda or go over to the glass enclosed case, housing penny candy that came in every colour imaginable. I especially loved those watermelon slices that were actually made of coconut. I haven't had one of those in a very long time. Althoug there was another option, an ice cream sundae. Yes, if I had saved up enough quarters, i'd splurge and devour a heavenly treat. So, if I had the time, i'd drift over to a stool and order a sundae or a Coke. A real one at that. I loved those stools because you could spin around and around. That was fun! However, if it was moments before the big neighbourhood stick ball game which was a daily occurence during the hot summer months, I went directly to the glass case and pointed to a this and that and then poof, out the door I went. It was now time to set the lineup.

crazygurl -- An HSR is a Historic Structures Report.  The report has a very specific format to it developed (and still refined) by the National Park Service and has three primary components.  First, the report talks generally about the history of the surrounding area, building and parcel, land ownership lineage, how and who constructed the building, it's original purpose/function and building morphology to contemporary time.  The second part is a real "meat and potatoes" thing.  It's basically a discussion existing conditions and covers things like architectural style description (with brief background on the style), an inventory of structural components and historical integrity with observations and descriptions regarding building degradation.  The third part is basically "what needs to happen" as far as intervention (building stabilization, conservation), suggested treatment/s (per the Secretary of the Interior's Standards), and how it should responsibly happen.

These reports are used as a basis for a lot of things.  A home owner who is looking to restore their structure back to a specific temporal context can use this report as a guide through the process.  Owners will have access to techniques used to properly accomplish this.  Materials and techniques used are not normally something you get at Lowes and put in with a nail gun, per se.  If an owner is looking for an idea about what to do with the structure, this report will/may suggest other uses for it other than what the structure use to be used for, while retaining as much of the historical integrity as possible (adaptive reuse).

It may sound like a lot; in some ways is it, but they are really useful and really fun to do; same thing for a Cultural Landscape Report.  I did a CLR last semester in a group setting and it was really cool.  We came up with some recommendations that really blew people away.  Historic Preservation has really been a neat thing to get into.  We use pretty much everything I've been interested and involved with in my private/academic/professional life: archaeology, anthropology, geology (physical and environmental), event planning, physical/cultural geography, archival and libraries -- and perhaps most importantly (not really ;)  ) hiking!

Well its closing in on 3 weeks. A new routine I adopted earlier this year whereby i've recorded everything I ate. I was curious about how many calories I was taking in versus what I should be intaking based on my age, weight, activity level and other factors. And what I found was this process has opened up a possible mechanism of controlling ones caloric intake hence, a method of reducing ones weight. I'll explain later.

First of all, it required some strick discipline. This was the primary element throughout this process. I began this journey by picking up a notebook from my nearby Staples consortium. I love the aisle with all the pens and pencils. There's just something about it I love. Maybe its being an Artist that wants to just grab'em all and start drawing something. Anyway, the notebook I bought is the "eco" version which happens to be made of 80% "bagasse". What's that you ask? I had no idea! I thought it was some fancy French tree or something. However, on the inside cover it kindly tells you all you want to know. It's basically the plant fiber waste from the production of sugar cane. Whatta ya know, i've been ed-u-ma-ca-ted! I tell ya what though, its not a bad product.

Anywho, I then began recording everything I ate including the calorie content. Oddly enough, I found myself recording weights in grams. Yes, the metric system! How quaint. And so as I mentioned previously, Santa hooked me up with a food scale and it came to life over these past few weeks. I weighed everything and then looked up its vitals. Mainly calories for now. Maybe i'll track other stuff like protein, fat and whatever. But for now its calories! I also found myself reading more product nutrition labels than I had ever wanted to however, its required reading.

So, after a week or so a trend began to emerge and more importantly a behaviour began to awaken. Yes, something I wasn't expecting. I began to adopt a behaviour of controlling what I ate. Yeah, very odd indeed. Here's why. Everytime I went to the pantry or frig to calm a craving, a little voice said, yo, after you eat that, you have to record the results in your little handy dandy eco notebook. And then a light bulb went on! Imagine that. A brain which only operates on 2 brain cells and one of them ignited. By the simple nature of knowing I had to record the results versus the number of calories I was trying to stay under caused me NOT to eat as much as I wanted. Pyschological manipulation at its finest. So, the behaviour of controlling ones intake can be managed by the innocent fear of having to record it. Hence, weight loss or in my case maintaining the weight. Weird right? Well, give it a try. Take 2 weeks and record everything you eat and look up your average caloric intake. There are a bunch of websites out there that can help ya out with this. Then manage what you eat against this number and see what happens after a 2 week period.

The other major factor to this equation is exercise. This ain't gonna work without burning calories in some fashion. Sitting in the LazyBoy with a bag of chips and a quart of Bud ain't gonna work. The basic equation is to burn more calories than you intake. The average caloric intake will take into account your activity level but one must adhere to that activity level or surpass it. Otherwise, you're wasting your time and its counter productive thus you most likely won't lose any weight. One last thing to mention.....drink mostly water and do NOT drink soda or any other HFCS based drink. Drop the sugar.

Ok that's enough rambling for now...... its time to go!.....peace out all........

Q= thanks for the explination.  I am familiar with the Historic 'thingies' but not ever had it explained as such.

Strat= have you ever considered being a life coach????  If not you need to be a writer. How about a life coach AND a writer???  I enjoyed both the explination of your record keeping but also the description of the notebook.  I too love that same aisle at Staples, Office Max etc.  What is it?  I love it in the fall when the school supplies start to come out. I love seeing all the differnet notebooks etc.

It is almost 11, I got up at 8:30...very late since I've been getting up at 5 the last couple of weeks.  I've not made it far past my corner of the couch. I've been enjoying the birds fight over the little bit of birdseed I put out on the porch.  I should of gotten more last night...instead of the bread, milk, oreos and wine!!! I found some old crackers and threw them out for the crows...it has distracted them from eatting the seed.  I have toehe, jays, junco, cardinals, wrens, sparrows, and doves. I sprinkled it on the top of the snow on the front porch.

There is 11" of snow on the ground that is being covered with a continual pelting of sleet.  I don't think we will be going any where today...pretty much snowed in.  I need to get off my tush and be productive.  I had said that I was going to work on cleaning out cabinets and closets.  However, I am thinking a movie and a nap wold be good!  LOL

Whatever you are doing today I hope you are safe and warm.

We're gettin` smattering of flurries and everyone goes in the ditch.

Great Caesar's ...

The gangly tree next door is getting worked down to a nub.  Poor fellas; looks like it's gonna take another half a day.  This thing was fucking out of control!  Grew sideways; I kid ya not.  Looks like I just annexed property with how open everything looks.  Damn shame Chinese Box Elders are shit for burning or I would have about 4-5 cord of free wood.  Oh well, the guy in charge told me he's bringing some newly felled Ash for me to have.  Don't know the quantity, but free wood is free wood.

Chow, Bella!

Fast forward to two days later and the last load of wood has been evacuated from the grounds.  There was minor fence damage, but that's alright.  This whole thing opens up a bunch of opportunities.

I'm going to be checking into micro-harvesting energy.  I have a lot of sun exposure during the summer (even more now) I get a fair amount of winter exposure now with that damn tree gone; and there's a good air current that breezes throughout the year, too.  I'd like to get something that will at least power my garage and is expandable.

We're upgrading the old homestead these days; new 7 watt LED replacement bulbs for the 50 watt halogens (I've got four sockets in that kitchen fixture)  Burning 28 watts now verses 200 watts.  That should pay back a little faster due to the amount of time those fixtures are left on (when I'm not home ... and even with a sensor on/off).  Put a 7watt LED in the porch socket, saving about 8 watts per hour on that one.  When the present CFs crap out, they'll be replaced with LED as much as possible.

Other slated projects coming in the next few weeks: upgrading the washer to a high efficiency model, the primary toilet and water heater, too; then bust a move on the bathroom renovation.
