OK y'all, I know many of ya are getting as old and decrepit as I am.  Others are just daredevils who don't know when to say "I don't think I want ot do that."

Fess up.  Whay aren't you on the trails?  Why do the non-trip report postings outnumber the trip report postings so dramatically?

Ewker, it sounds liek you're a healthy, frequent trail trekker.  when's the last time you were held back by an injury?

As for reporting damage that keeps one off of the trails, I'll go first (since I started this thing, I suppose that's only fair).

Spring 2004, last weekend in April to be exact.  I went out to the Oly NP coastline to support the annual beach cleanup weekend that happens in conjunction with Earth Day.  Shameless plug:  On Earth Day, go find something that neads cleaning up, and clean it up!

On the first evening of that long weekend hike, I broke Rule #1 of Oly beach hiking.

Rule #1:  Don't fall in the fire.  Those of you who have heard me tell this tale before can stop reading now.  For the rest.... here's a (very) abbreviated version.

The fire was freshly built, so I wasn't badly burned, just some blisters on my hands.  However, when I threw myself off the fire (very enthusiastically, I might add) the subsequent face-plant into the firewood pile I had strategically placed next to the fire created a whole new set of issues to address.  Crushed right cheekbone, shattered floor of my right eye socket.

I was camped alone (of course) and it was almost 11PM at night on a Thursday...  suffice it to say, the next few hours were challenging.

I finished the trip as planned (of course) - I'm not one to let a little thing like a broken face slow me down.  I did about 50% of the cleanup work that I had intended to do as my share of the trash pickup effort, and got home late Sunday.

Tuesday morning I was the lucky recipient of surgery to rebuild my broken face.  Titanium brace implant, screws, relocated cartilage, lots of fun things.  The residual damage to various facial nerves had me in pain and semi-mentally-functional (due to a variety of nasty and powerful drugs) for most of the following year before the nerve isuses settled down.   During that time I was on trail essentially zero times - there were no bagnights, and only a couple daywalks.

This happened about the time I became dissolusioned with the TT discussion forum, which is why I never reported in to the TT injured reserve page for this little uff-duh.

In case anyone's interested, here are rules #2 and #3 for Oly NP beach camping, both of which were learned the hard (bur fortunately not as painful) way:

#2: Never turn your back on a live ocean.

#3: Never go into the woods without a compass.

More recently, bad stress fractures in my left foot this last Nov-Dec timeframe have kept me hobbled for most of the past 6 months or so.  I'm just now starting the process of working my legs back into shape.  I dread how much pain will be involved with that first hiking trip, but you know what they say:

No pain; no pain.

Well, surgery for a torn rotator cuff is keeping me off the trails right now.

Oh yea, a torn meniscus from an injury while climbing Loomis a few months ago, just tore again. I was hoping to get out this weekend, but nooooooooooooo, I had to re injure myself. You should have seen my doctors face when I went in for the knee yesterday. You didn't fall on the should did you, he asked. Nope, I blew out the knee because I didn't tuck and roll like I wanted to. Funny, he was OK with that :-)

Damn strider, I feel better after reading you post.

Thanks ;-)

How can I begin?

February 2006 - Replaced right knee.
April/July/September 3 more surgeries because of infection.
October 2006 - Removed all hardware on my right knee.
October 2006 - Two days after surgery, had a mild stroke.
Present - Right leg permanently fused straight. Left leg is fused 90ยบ and will have it straightened shortly.

I did have a short "hike" in July 2, 2007...

Dang Strider!

Steve - Hope you get better soon...

I have been out since the first of May with ligament damage in my ankle, but this week I was released from Physical Therapy now that my ankle has reached 85% of the strength it had before the injury. I have still had a problem with a subluxing peronial tendon and if that continues I will have to have surgery and be out for six months but as long as I can keep it from subluxing, no more surgery will be required.

I am planning to get out for my first overnighter since April sometime in late August, and if everything goes well, I can still get ten trips in for the year.

Ive been out with two bad knees. i think I have water in them. No Ins means I can not get them fixed. But I have been kayaking at least twice a week. Does that count?

Mike, that's a very rough hit you're working thru.  My brother-in-law (who is 72) had a knee replacement a year ago and his turned out OK.  It's a damshame yours hasn't worked out.  Hopefully the dokkers will be able to find or estqablish a positive end-state condition for you.

Once the knees are both straight, what's the projection for your mobility?  I assume that a straight-legged gait would be better than not walking at all.  Maybe with a coule hitech poles, you could take on some trails again?

Not injured, but----its like a 8 hour drive anywhere from here for 'decent' backpacking which wouldnt be such a big deal except I work every other weekend, share a car with my husband so if he has to work but I have off, its a no go, and I can't take off friday afternoons as I work the evening shift so to drive 16 hours for an over nighter is UGH. Most of my trips have to wait untill vacation days. I do day hike around here though.

Strider,

Yes, I should be able to walk again at some point. Once I'm able to stand 100% again, I would walk just like a Penguin! I hope I want need any walker/cane to walk, but we will see. Right now I'm trying to just stand with one leg. I haven't been able to put all of my weight on my right leg yet...only about 90%, but I'll get there. Not sure how I can get over rocks and stuff, but we'll have to see!

My rotator cuff repair seems to be coming along well.

I just found out I have to go in next month for my torn meniscus. The doc said that it's like getting a haircut compared to the shoulder surgery...kinda sorta ;-)

I can live with that.

I'll be skiing by January!!!

Get well all!

Rosey....I'm told that I'm now paying for all the fun I had the last 30+ years....sooner or later you gotta pay the piper, LOL.

Or as my wife says...my warranty expired.

I hope all the injured get better real soon.

I've been lucky, but not real smart.

The only injury I've had has been minor. I sprained my ankle in Red Rocks (near Vegas) last November on the way to Bridge Mountain and I just kept hiking on it (I figured it couldn't be too bad if I could walk on it).  After I got back to the truck I realized the area around my ankle was all blown up.  I took a little over a week off and headed back out with it all taped up.  My son warned me that it wouldn't heal correctly if I kept hiking on it.  He was correct - I no longer have full range of motion in that ankle and it is still weaker than the other one, but I'll just have to live with it.
