Karen and Jerry who belong to our NorthCA Hiking (Yahoo group) hit the ADT a few weeks ago and seem to be taking their time.  They hit Dolly Sods a few days ago and are working there way sorta west.  Luckily they both retired in the last year so have been luxuriating at B & B's a few times and the associated hot tub in between camping out in their tent.  Tough life.   Karen has been posting photos from their trip, showing the high water debris along the C & O canal, Dolly Sods and shots of new friends and others they have met on their trip, that makes it all interesting.  Many have commented on her writing style, when posting to the blog thingy, she has a word for the day when she does that.:)  So I get to see what y'all have been bping in.  Take care.

The link is just for the day I copied it from.  My own, original link for myself takes me to the current, latest post of theirs.  Not sure what I need to do to get to that place in my post.  If interested, you can view their photos by scrolling down to the appropriate day in photos.

I didn't use the link in your post. I (shamefacedly) didn't know what ADT meant, so I googled it. I clicked on the google listing, and the home page that came up mentioned Karen and Jerry.

Whoa!  Cool!  Thanks for checking.  A local college instructor and his wife tried the trail a few years ago, but due to high humidity in August that was doing him in, they had to abort.  Their timing was aimed at where they would be in the winter, whereas, Karen and Jerry aren't concerned as they plan on flying home for the holidays then going back.  Talk about not being in a hurry.

They are literally livin' the dream. That is exactly what I want to be doin' in my retirement. That is, if I ever GET to retire, and have enough money to just vagabond around like that....just think of it, hikin all day in peace and quiet* and relative solitude, settin up camp and cooking a good dinner, watching the coals of your campfire glow with maybe a nice glass of port and a pipe, hitting the sack, maybe reading chapter or two of your current favorite novel before resting peacefully and starting all over again. Yeah, I'm not MUCH of a romantic....

[* as I get older, I'm finding that I really relish this 'peace and quiet' thing more & more...guess you really do turn into your father]

I gotta work another 9-10 years.  Some bp trips are planned around having to get back, versus, getting back when I get back.  If push comes to shove, I could collect on my 401k's until early Social Security retirement, but the money I have set aside is so I can do a little later, not peddle around with all my belongings on a bicycle in my sixties.  At least I have no debt.

Years ago I thought of getting a travel trailer and just traveling around, but part of me likes roots too.

If you participate in 'social networking' or 'social media' [geez, how I hate those terms!], it seems like you can take a some of those 'roots' with you, these days. you may not be able to hug 'em, but you can skype 'em...

I may become a snowbird when I get older, just go home when the snow melts.  When I get too decrepit, I'll sell my place and become more mobile or into a home.
