It's mainly a social event.

It's  not normally a long hike to get to the rendez-vous point.  The exception was 2 004 when snow conditions rendered the hike quite difficut and no-one made it to the lean-to until the next day - you saw the photo, Euro, of Zac and me waking up in our bivvy sacks.

People make a fire and sit round socialising.  The hardier souls go for a day hike on Saturday; AmyG usually chooses one up a small, local mountain.  Geezers like MarkO and I usually just hang round, shoot the shyte and pull on each other's pipe (as they say in French Canadian).

A few of us have brought skis, but if it's hilly, snowshoes are easier and I'll bring mine and a pair for Euro.

I find that heavy clothing is not a problem with the hikers, erring on the side of too much rather than too little.  Comfort, I find, is in the details: a warm toque or (better) balaclava, Really warm mitts - too warm for anywhere but sitting in camp (I have lots, Euro), foam pads cut from a foam mattress to put your butt and your feet on (a big difference) and warm booties that let you remove your heavy winter boots in camp - I'll have a extra pair for Euro.

Ops, I exceeded the permissible length in my last post.

Here goes:

Last year I slept in Fridge's heated tent.  Everyone teases him about it, but he usually finds someone who wants to try it.  Last year it was me.  I have been winter camping for over fifty years and had never done it with a heater.  It was good and had the added atraction of Fridge's dog, Trail, sleeping with us.

I guess we could consider the heated tent a good safety measure.  Also, AmyG is a trained and experienced EMT and Euro has just finished her Wilderness First Responder course (which is how I met her).

Anybody else?

Please?

Heated tent?!? Such thing exists?
If there is enough snow I show you how to built a quinzee, just like the one we built and slept in on the NOLS winter course :-) But, I am afraid, Fridge can not bring his heater inside the quinzee.

"Heated tent?!? Such thing exists?"

If I remember right, when I saw it the tent was some Hilleberg ten man tent thing.  He had bottle propane heaters in it ... 82 degrees I remember was one tent reading.

Quite impressive.

Seems like we are having a better discussion over here than at TT!

If anybody has some suggestions for new locations feel free to chime in.

We would like to keep it in the Adirondacks. Need a relatively short distance to base camp but not too short where we will "bring attention" to our group. And a Saturday destination is always good for those that want to get out and get some exercise in.

And yes above all... a place that allows a fire for all the socializing!

That tent was pretty cool.  At that FYAO it looked like a Hilleberg brochure.

My vote is for Cascade Pond because it answers all the criteria.

If you stay till Monday, Euro, will you miss your ride back?

Depends on the rider :-)

By the way, thanks Gremlin for the generell description of a FYAO trip. Now that gives me an idea what it is like and what to expect. Cool. Looking forward to it.
