Great moderator system over there.

If someone insults you day in and day out, you're supposed to ignore it, report it and let the moderators handle it, right?

I gave that a try.

A very hideous post about my celebrating 9/11 was left for almost a month until I embarrassed the moderators in an open thread. I had reported it twice, but somehow my report never got through. Sure.

No action was taken on dozens of other daily insults because, I was was told, I wasn't reporting all the other people who were being civil to me.

When I had enough and responded once, I got the "white screen of death".

Have fun with your site, it was fun while it lasted.

Some parts of poor viles bitchfest do contain some bits of true, but in a very warped violin lens.

I don't think either of us of been given a day we get of tt

I'm having some fun emails with noncon and pedx that reveal a lot about their juicy moding methods

The basic moding method is that each and every mods makes up their own rules, and applys them as they please.

Why does everyone always come over here to complain about Trail Talk, lol? Im sure the Latta group loves to hear it.

Ladies and gentleman of the Latta jury, please let me point out the fact that here you have two TTers whove been at each others throats for years and each one is now claiming unfairness and bias on behalf of the moderators. Please treat them as hostile witnesses.

First of all, Stovie, in light of your recent characterization of our email exchanges, you may now refrain from emailing me with your Trail Talk concerns. Im not sure what juicy tidbits you claim to be privy to but Ive said nothing to you that I havent already said on Trail Talk numerous times. However, you may C&P said emails here as Exhibit A if you like and let the jury decide.

No, thats not what you were told at all.

You were warned once. So was the other party
You were given a timeout once. So was the other party.
You were given a longer timeout this time. So was the other party.

The insults of which you speak are like so many others on the site in that they occasionally ride a very fine line between personal and not. I think youre probably aware of that evidenced by some of the questions you posted over there. It may even have been personally explained to you as such. (In fact Ive posted ad nauseum over there exactly what its like trying to moderate Trail Talk.) That makes it difficult for anyone to moderate. While those posts all seem to be antagonistic, whats the benchmark? The moderators struggle with it daily. Its easy to point fingers if youre not dealing with it. How much time should we spend trying to sort out intent, context, etc? I dont give a shit what anyone thinks; its easier said than done.

TT is funny: its never anyones fault, its always the other guy; I didnt start it first, the other guy did; why should I stop if he doesnt stop? Hardly anyone ever stops. We all want our very own personal version of TT where we can do what we want and everyone else just has to take it. So the moderators have a decision: free-for-all or put the clamps on?

Have fun with your site, it was fun while it lasted.

What was your fun when you were there? The camaraderie? The trips? The funny little link in your Violin profile? The fuego trolling? It sucks to realize that you sometimes really do have to lie in the bed youve made. Doesnt have to be that way though. You will be able to come back. Up to you what you want TT to be like for you. Why not come back and help make it better?
Ive now told 5 TTers who have concerns about events on Trail Talk to feel free to get in touch with me and Ill work with the other moderators to come up with a solution. Ive recently revoked that offer to one of them but the same offer goes to you. What makes it difficult in your case, as Ive stated, is your history; its not easy to tell if you mean it or not. Either way, my offer still stands.

Violin is right that an offensive post accusing liberal TT'ers of glee over the 9/11 attacks stayed on the board too long.  It doesn't justify stating that another TT'er (not the one who posted the offending remark) plesures himself when he thinks of his fellow citizens dying.  Nor was that the only over the top post since the one week "timeout."

Anyone who has watched Stovie over the past few years on TT can form their own opinions on that front.  I wouldn't post his emails anywhere without his permission, but I give him permission to post any complete email from him along with my complete response.

On a personal note, I think Violin is a great guy and has brought me some of my most enjoyable moments on TT.  He's on my TT'ers I'd most like to meet list and I'd want to buy him a beer or whatever he is drinking if he ever came to my town. If I was "protecting" people as Stovie alleged repeatedly or making up rules and applying them as I pleased - I'd have protected him.

Really? Looks that way to me:

The problem is that we see posts similar to what you mention here (and later posted yourself) reported by a single current user as well as several nameless lurkers that only seem to target one specific user yet neglecting similar posts made by other users. Why? Do we want posts of this nature to go away or do we want a specific user to go away?

I can't speak for any other moderator but it seems to me that if this concern is legitimate then the people reporting that type of message would gain credibility by reporting them all.

Can you find any posts that I directed at StoveStomper between April 2007 and this spring? 

I finally took him off ignore because I became aware of false accusations he was making about me to someone who I have corresponded with off of TT and knows my real identity. Ignoring libel isn't wise.

Ive only directed a handful off posts to him since then. Admittedly, when I do hit back, I don't fool around.

Over the past few years I can find hundreds, if not thousands of insults hes thrown my way.

If thats your definition of being at each other's throats, I think my charge of bias is pretty accurate.

Here's a question for the moderators:

Is it acceptable to name call and say all sorts of nasty things about other TTers as long as you don't specifically mention them by name?


For example:

I know I'd get banned for saying: Poster A is an ignorant jackass who rejoices at the death of his fellow Americans on 9-11.

Is it OK if I phrase it like this?: The stupid jackass from Delaware who posted just before me celebrates 9-11.


In my view, the second one is just as bad as the first. I'm interested to hear what the official policy is.

You know damned well who took the opportunity to remember September 11th by posting that there were people on TT who were happy about the attack.

I took your advice and didn't respond but reported the message... twice.

It remains weeks later.

Please don't pretend that you're looking to moderate in an even-handed manner and if only we would report messages without bias, you could do your job.

Violin - I searched the reported posts list and found no record that the post you reference had been reported ever. I just reported and deleted it. The post was unacceptable as was one similar but even more venomous after being reported some days back.

I did note the post in question and relayed your question, so I share responsibility for not reporting and then deleting it. For some reason I thought it was gone. We cannot delete posts that have not been reported - though we can report them ourselves (which becomes very time consuming when there are multiple posts - one reason why threads with many offending posts may disappear).

You didnt mention a skipped over reported message until after I talked about message reporting---you asked what the official policy was. In fact you.unintentionally (???) left out the most important part: If youre being serious, then lets have the discussion. Anyone reading the string of posts would see it for what it is. I didnt know what you were talking about other than a proposed way to slip an attack past the moderators and neither did anyone else. Bottom line is you made it about me (and apparently a cadre of other biased moderators who obviously skipped over your reported post) and gave pedxing a pass.

Look, I like having you on Trail Talk. You have a good sense of humor and manage to contribute (like Stovie can) on actual non-fuego threads. But when we speak about using words, why dont both of you try these:
