I've got lots of hiking goals for this winter, but one highlight of my year is usually an extended backpacking trip.  I'm usually lucky enough to manage getting out for one good long trip.  This year it was nothing better than weekend backpacks, so I'm promising myself I'll get out for more.  I've got two trips on my mind, the first is the John Muir Trail which takes some planning and coordination, as well as some money to fly out and get to the trail and probably some lodging.  This is the one I'm more likely to actually do.

1) Start at the Canadian Border in New Hampshire at the north end of the Cohos trail (a little over 160 miles)
2) Take the Nancy Pond Trail, Wildreness Trail, Osseo Trail, etc... to meet up with the AT around Kinsman Ridge (30+ miles)
3) Follow the AT to Maine junction (110+ miles)
4) Follow the LT North as far as I can go in the time I have (or maybe the LT/AT south) ? miles

If I complete the first 3, this would be my longest backpack so far (longest is 280+) and it would mean doing the 40 mile stretch of the New England AT that I've never done (Norwich to Maine Junction).

Ideas on this one?   Got a day dream hike you're thinking of doing?

John Muir walk in more places than just out west. There are several other Trails scattered about in the east with his name attached to them. Some of which are nicely scenic too.

Wow, Ped, have you packed it in for the year?  I've still got at least a couple of trips left in me for this year.  Although the days are shorter and the weather less dependable, less crowds and NO bugs are big plusses for me hiking this time of year.

Although I gotta admit, I am thinking of several places I want to spend some time in next summer....

Next summer will be better than this past summer.  Well it better be.  I only ended up going on two trips, Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

Kleet, I haven't packed it in for the year - but since I teach part time at a college, I have no chance at getting in even a five day trip until Christmas vacation - let alone the multi week trips I really love.

Also, in the winter its still mostly day trips for me, I lost some insulation and circulation due to injury - so I'm wary of being too far from civilization for long when its very cold.  It's a lot harder to keep my fingers and toes from getting frost nip than it used to be.   I used to go with just liner gloves and when I was moving and never used my heat packs.   Now, I've got layers of gloves and mittens and almost always use chemical packs if I hit treeline on a winter hike.

I would love to do more summer hiking, but my job is always at it's peak in the summer. But I do like the thought of less snakes, bugs and people when winter hiking.

I absolutely HATE hiking in the summer 'round these parts.  Warm weather sucks the life outta me on the trail, and the bugs ....  ARG!!

You probably know this, Ped, but heat pads go on the back of your hand and on top of your feet for best results.

I love hiking in bug season (black fly).  Fewer people out, trout are biting, and I temps aren't too hot yet.  I'm also not right in the head.

Ped...if you are ever scheduled to hike with me...I will work on a couple of nubile Hooter's Girls for treatment for hypothermia (its the least I could do...and never let it be said I didn't to the least I could do)

So when we get you to camp, set up the tent....IN the sleeping bag with the two lasses you go.
