I'm leaving in an hour to say bye to my beloved dog, Bear, a shepherd husky. He still thinks he's a puppy, but his body is feeling all of his 11 years. He's the 2nd dog I've gone through this with this year. He has been a faithful friend, comforter, entertainer, protector, babysitter, and oh so much more. Very sad day...

Sorry to hear that Sunny, it's hard to reach that decision. I feel your pain. Only time can erase that sadness.

Thanks all. Marko, yeah, I'm in town for a week. My son is already planning on a puppy for the fall, but we'll see. It will definitely be a trail dog--maybe Fridge's dogs can teach it proper trail etiquette!

Sunny, my girl...Morgan is either 16 or 17 and is still the sweetest Chesapeake Bay Retriever you could ever meet. She pretty much spends the day crashed on the carpet or on the bed at night. I know the time is ticking down. And I remember oh 11 years or so ago when we got her. I had lost my chessie Daisy who had been a constant companion. I came on the TT threads and posted the loss. AmyG suggested a rescue group. And the Rest is history.

I wish I could tell you it will be okay. But I can only tell you that you can get through it. Good luck.

Hey Sunny, get a retriever with short hair!

Chessies as a rule are some of the sweetest pups I have ever been around. I have 4 right now and while they are headstrong as can be they can be disciplined (my 13 year old 70 lb or so daughter CONTROLS the two +100 lb males that are her babies) and become loving family dogs.

There are a couple of downsides, they have to run and play, but you want someone who will stick to you like glue day and night...they are family dogs. I had chessies before I had kids so my kids have always grown up around em. Send me an email and I can answer any quesitons.

I had to put my dalmatian down a few months ago. He was 15. It was so hard to do but I just couldn't stand to watch him suffer. I still have 2 dogs and I know I will have to go through the same thing with them eventually, but the love and joy they bring lasts forever.

S-d, I'm a little late to the thread - but I offer my condolences and symptathy.  It's so tough to know when to put a dog down and so sad to lose a good dog.
