So I'm getting ready for another trip out west and I'm debating the bear canister. The canister I have is a rather weird shape and is hard to pack. I don't mind the weight, I just hate packing it in my pack. So the flexible nature of the ursack looks really nice.

Living in the southeast, I'm not required to have a bear canister. I just need rodent protection.

Any opinions on the ursack? Can rodents get into them?

I've never had any problem with mine.  I have the sack and the metal liner, although I don't take the liner unless I'm in major bear territory.

I have heard people swear they did everything right and still had their bag successfully raided by small rodents, and hear others swear its impossible.

I assume that the sack is highly rodent resistant, but not rodent proof - so I won't leave it on the floor in a shelter where mice are rampant - but hang it from the rafters with a lot less worry.

If I had some money to burn, I'd leave the sack in my step-son's rat cage for a few days and then his ferret cages and see how it holds up.

Bottom line:  For me its a good compromise beetween the weight and the space issues of a cannister and the vulnerability of a standard stuff-sack.

Been using Ursacks for about 5 years now, I love mine, never had any problems with critters getting in, a few have tried now & then but wee unsuccessful!

It's not a bear-approved container, though, so make sure you check out if you need an "approved" contacviner for wherever you're heading!  If you do need an approved container, I am also a big fan of my BeariCade weekender!

I like my Ursack and I've not had any problems with it....despite hanging/tying it in areas that rodents could probably get to it fairly easily (like at the base of trees....or midway up a small tree trunk etc.) I do not have any holes in it yet and my food has been ok to date.

What about waterproofness? I know you should probably use a liner like their odor proof ones. But does the bag itself soak up water? Like if it rained at night, how wet would the bag be in the morning?

mine has only been dewed upon and nothing inside was wet. I don't use the odorproof bag they give you when you buy the Ursack, but I do put the majority of my food in a ziplock inside the ursack.

The only rainstorm my bag has seen, it was hanging from a string in a shelter....sooo I can't speak to waterproofness. How bout we say its water resistant.

Ditto what SweetPea said - I've always used the liner, or at the very least had my food in a zip-loc so I've never known whether my Ursack was water-proof, water-resistant or whatever!

Long story short, my food has never been wet! :)

My Ursack was waterproof, but not critter proof. I thought I was tying everything up right, but still found a couple nibble holes in the inner odorproof bag, fortunately near the end of the trip. No bear has ever attacked it so I don't really know if it is truly bear-proof. the video was convincing.

I decided to give it a try. I'm really looking forward to not having my bear canister poke me in the back all day.

maybe someone could take their ursack to a zoo...with some large animal ...or a bear if you know of zoos with bears...and we could test our the durability of the Ursack :)
