To put it simply, hiking is just taking a walk outside. There is no set distance that is required for a walk to be considered a “hike”. Most hikers like to get out into the wilderness and enjoy their natural surroundings. Longer, multi-day hikes are often considered Backpacking trips.
Many state and National Parks offer hiking and nature trails. The length of the trail really determines what the trails conditions will be like. Shorter nature trails are often made like cement sidewalks. This provides easy access for all skill levels. As trails get longer, they may turn into a cleared path along the ground.
Day hiking is a hike that is completed in one day. These can range anywhere from less than a mile to over 20 miles. It all depends on the skill level of the hiker. On an average day hike, the hiker will pack a lunch to enjoy along the trail. While a day hike may not be very long, you still need to be prepared with a first aid kit, water bottle and snacks.
