Most importantly, lets hope and pray for a full recovery for the guys he shot this time (they were out fishing and shared their catch with him). But 15 years in jail (even when followed by 10 with an ankle bracelet) was not enough for the double murder in '81.

I'm all for throwing the switch on this one. I'll even volunteer to do it.
I had an epiphany today. It was so good, I think I'll have another.

My number one wish is for the two gentleman who offered to share their catch to recover and do well, but in my gut - having this murderer gone is a close second.
Nimble - all fuego aside - I'd gladly shake the hand that pulled the switch on this guy.
Yeah Pamma - he's an poster boy for truth in sentencing (and, at this point, for the death penalty IMHO). If they stuck to the 30 he'd been sentenced to, he wouldn't have been out yet.

I know a LOT of cases where people got more time than that on lesser charges. This is absurd.

True enough Wildbill. There are lots of people who have put in long stretches of time for bogus stuff and then this guy kills two people and is out in 15.

WOW...not really going to make a comment except to say, Why execute him? pull the cord on the ventilator let nature take it's course. The way I see it let him lay there conscious for the last remaining hours of his life slowly suffocating.
Ped, he probably got out in 15 because that may have been the definition of "Life" (usually figured at 60 years) then you used to be able to get time off for good behavior (you can build that up) plus other benefits. In most states it has changed by now.
From reading what people said about him, I would say he has some serious mental issues. I want to know the name of the Psychology expert who evaluated him and decided he was safe to return to society.

It is moot now, but I don't know how we could analyze how he got out in 15 years until we take a long look at how he only got sentenced to 30 to begin with.
It would seem two murders would get a double life sentence, to run consecutively. However, the fact he only got 30 tells me there were some problems with the first case. Early release is a direct result of overcrowding.
Don't want the thugs on the street? Just demand that the legislature spend your tax money to house more prisoners.

Chili is right, but I think there should be much more spent on "real punishment". Sorry but we can be tough and "no fun whatsoever" without being brutal.
And we never know this may have been a fouled up case, or a case that you had some other information....OH well moot point. He is infront of a judge now who won't allow defense weasels, or plea bargains.

how is someone on a ventilator and then out of the hospital the next day?
it's a great relief to know he's dead though.

The uninsured are ready for "discharge" quicker than those who have full insurance. However, when the Insurance company says you are ready for discharge, you better call for a wheel chair.

Jeez, I was a reporter in Waynesboro, Virginia, when the 1981 case happened. I remember it well. I interviewed park rangers and Appalachian Trail Conference people about crime on the trail using that case and some other minor crimes that happened closer to home. The consensus was, of course, that you are safer on the trail than at home. Still, it was disconcerting then, and it just keeps happening.
It's always some dreg of society who does it. Hikers (and fishermen, apparently) seem to open up to people they meet on the trail. Their guard is down and it's easy pickings to the thugs.

A rescue crew arrived about 45 minutes after the men got there, they said, and worked on them for about an hour. A rescue worker called for a helicopter to fly them to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
holy crap, i know it's rural but 45 minutes!

The only dreg-type hikers I have a problem with are the ones who wipe their hands on the walls of the johns along the AT in the Smokies after going #2 without the benefit of tp. Cripes, just gather some freaking leaves and use those. It's a composting toilet anyways, peeps. I have actually left a travel sized can of Lysol disinfectant at the Icewater Springs toilet because of just such an incident. Powder fresh, no less.
