I might as well start some fun threads here since whats her face took leave of her mind!
so, I am hoping to start my garden this weekend. The night time temps are avg 35 to 40 so i think it is time to get the ground tilled. I will start the seeds in the greenhouse then get them in the ground when they are nice and tall. I usually get them from the garden store at that height but i want to grow them myself.
so whats in your garden and have you atarted it yet?

Hey Maps!
Thanks for starting this thread. I have flowers not veggies and I've really been enjoying watching them pop up. I have an armenian basket flower that is huge already...it won't bloom until mid summer.
I think we are going to plant some patio tomatos this year. Something for the hubby to do!

My neighbor has some strange plants in their garden and for some reason, they shoot at me when I try and get a better look at them.
"As a man tramps the woods to the lake he knows he will find pines and lilies, blue herons and golden shiners, shadows on the rocks and the glint of light on the wavelets, just as they were in the summer of 1354, as they will be in 2054 and beyond. He can stand on a rock by the shore and be in a past he could not have known, in a future he will never see. He can be a part of time that was and time yet to come."

I planted cardinal climber and scarlet hyacinth bean last week. Both hardy blooming heirloom climbers. The rest has to wait until Mr. Greenjeans gets home to wrestle the rototiller.

I wish I could grow more in my yard. I am limited because of the humungo black walnut in the back yard. Its roots leach a substance into the ground that kills almost everything except grass. My only option appears to be raised bed.

Hey Mapleleaf, lettuce is pretty tricky to transplant, plus it's a cold weather crop. You'd probably be better off just growing it in the greenhouse totally or just planting it in the ground. It's not too early for lettuces, spinach, radishes and peas.

Things like radishes and peas should also be direct seeded rather than transplanted.
My shallots are doing beautifully. The 2 potato plants I have going, from one manky little one left in the veggie bin, are very pretty little plants, too. Laurel dotes over them.

I stopped by Hammonton, NJ (the blueberry capital of the world) and picked up three more blueberry bushes today.
I learned that the old man that taught me so much about blueberry husbandry passed away this winter.
At least I have 6 of his plants.

I had an epiphany today. It was so good, I think I'll have another.

"sluggo" and other brands of iron phosphate do wonders on slugs. Turns into fertilizer, too. Thanks for reminding me, I need to put iron phosphate out around the raised beds. I found quite a few dried slime trails down at the southeast corner.

Considering the nature of the produce manager at the grocery I frequent, he'd probably lay a live trap in the store and take the critter home to add to the stew pot. He's an old Scottish guy wit ha great fondness for fresh game with lots of vegetables.

I tilled up some nice soil right next to my house yesterday. The plan is to have a kitchen garden with salad greens and some colder weather vegetables close by. After being without t.v. for about a year, I had just turned it back on the night before and fell asleep without watching anything. After I finished tilling, I went a little further down the row in order to turn the awkward machine around and promptly cut the cable. Today's list of chores will include a trip to town and some cable splicing materials. I've done worse, far worse.
I had an epiphany today. It was so good, I think I'll have another.

Dang, I can sit out in the yard and watch the garden grow! That's frightening. I couldn't do that in Florida. The tuberous sunflowers are growing especially fast, as are the shallots. The garlic and leeks don't look too happy though. I need to find my missing gardening book and see what I need to change for them. The corn is already about 4-5 inches tall, too. Woo Hoo! Red potatoes are doing way too well, and I just got in most of my sweet potato slips for planting this afternoon.
I still have to prep most of the yard for the koi pond tour next month, on the 14th. I have to make everything as pretty as possible. Oh goody, huh? Any of you freaks who live in the region are more than welcome to stop by.
