my gym has a new device in it - something called a handwagger - some sort of self belay device. I didn't even try to figure out how to use it.

Sweet. Make sure you mark those 2 so you don't get them mixed up. They are sooooo alike, it's easy to get them confoozed.

I'm puzzled why there would be any self belaying at all in a gym, except for the people working there setting routes. I've never seen it done at my gym cuz there is always someone around willing to belay. The only reason I self belay at all outdoors is because my climbing partners are never around. :o(

Anywho, I am super psyched to hit real rock again. This will start my 2nd year of climbing and I've been climbing in the gym 2-4 times a week this winter.

Self-belay? The rock gym I was frequenting was... well, it was as quiet as a church! Especially during "off hours", there was noone around and the staff were scarce. Going to the gym by myself, I often had to wait around until I could find a staffer who would belay me. Needless to say, I don't go there no mo!

I work part time at a local climbing wall. When its slow...self belaying seems to always drum up interest.....and helps pass the time. Its kinda my "hey hold my beer & watch this" trick.

GNP - Yes, and yes. :o)
I've used a Petzl mini traxion to self belay. Works great but you can't lower with it. I have a Silent Partner which is designed for self belay but meant to be used more for lead rope soloing. Works ok for tr soloing but I'm not crazy about the way it feeds. My device of choice now is the grigri, with a notch cut out which makes the rope feed like butter. This is also known as the "grigri death mod" cuz there's a slight chance during a lead fall that the rope could sever. I haven't heard of anyone dying yet and I don't lead with it. Plus, I use back up knots that I clip into. I tie a figure 8 at the half way point of the rope at the anchor so I essentially have 2 ropes hanging down. One is the climbing rope and the other I tie loops every 5-6' or so. As I climb I use a runner and clip in the knots so if the gri-gri fails, I'm still safe. I like the system and feel secure with it.

I don't think I've ever seen my climbing gym slow. It has a solid reputation in the climbing community, and there are always very good climbers there willing to help out newbies like me.

I spent my MEC dividend on an ID bivy just like Pennsy told me to.

Grems - a machine? You mean the gri-gri, and only 1? I've heard of some gyms where every rope uses a gri-gri and anchored to the floor making it nearly impossible to drop someone.

Nice score on the ID bivy. Quite a change from your old army bivy.
