McAfee Knob TRIP

This is another one of those segments along the AT that is so beautiful and challenging to do.

Meet at the Dragons Tooth Trail Head April 17th off road 311. Take the Dragons Tooth Trail Head,1.2 miles blue blaze,rated as moderate. NOT the boy scout trail. (if you do take the boy scout trail you can intersect the AT and head south bound to find us.) We can camp at the Trail intersection AT- DRAGONS TOOTH TRAIL. Bring some water with you , there are a couple of streams along the Dragons Tooth Trail , but I have no way of knowing if they will be flowing.

Friday morning head down and cross SR 785 and on to Beckner Gap. There will be some streams along this section for tanking up. Continue along Catawba Mountain crossing rd 311. There is a parking lot here if some of you want to meet us here friday evening. The plan is to camp at Catawba Mt shelter or in the area friday night.

Saturday head up Catawba Mountain up to McAfee Knob, said to be most photographed place along the AT. After a lunch at McAfee we bolt down to Campbell shelter or general area and camp saturday. If we are making good time we could continue on to Tinker Mt. but need to have plenty of water.

Sunday move out up to Tinker Cliffs and then down along the Andy Lane trail 2 miles to my Truck to shuttle back to Dragons Tooth Trail Head.


Eat at THE HOME PLACE in Catawba. Sunday. BRING YOUR CAMERA.

" Those who cannot get to this trip on thursday or friday morning can meet at the parking area at Catawba Mt on rd 311. Catawba Shelter on Friday evening and meet us there. You will still see awesome views of some of the most beautiful areas along the AT.


After the trip we can eat at the Famous Home Place that caters to the thru hikers. I have personally eaten here and this is a thru hikers HEAVAN. All you can eat and drink, with deserts.

No, not familiar with the area, and neither is Cocohead, but I'm ok with directions, and we can be there anytime after 1pm on thurs. Coco has all the maps and has looked them over, is sending them to me.

Give me a day or 2 and I will give you specific instructions as too where the AndyLane Trail head is located . Thank you.

VA..... off route 311 west of Roanoke. McAfee Knob area .. said to be the most Photographed place on the AT.

little town called catawba. There appears to be 2 catawbas in VA, this is the one near I-81 and roanoke

Marko, you can park at the trail head parking lot off of Rt. 311 in Catawba. You'd have to double back saturday though....

I'm still arriving Friday Night (will get to 311 at about 7:30 - 8:00). I will have one other person with me....

I intend on meeting ya'll at the shelter Friday night....hopefully before dark but I'll see how it goes.

I'm still seriously debating showin up Thursday....but that would entail walkin out after dark...I wonder, if I got up at 6:00 a.m. Friday morning....I could be home by....and then I could leave for work.....LOL.

There is a very reliable source at Lambert Field Shelter, however we will be sharing it with a lot of deer. I was there last memorial day and they pretty much waited in line for me to get done filtering..

They were actually sniffing backpacks when we were there...

Yeah, got my harps--but don't feel like carrying them all. I'll bring 2--what keys? D&G? I can bring them all in the truck (ok coco? got room?), but not in my pack. I'm a newbie, remember, and need to keep it light! Of course, if you guys want more keys, you're welcome to carry them! :)

Oh, Mr. Fridge, about water. Plenty on the trails or no? I remember you said something about it on the OTHER thread, but that one mysteriously disappeared! I have almost forgiven you. (she said with a wink).

Sunny.. There are a few places to get water between Dragon's Tooth and the Catawba Shelter (some of which are in the middle of cow pastures) There is a reliable water source at the Catawba Shelter and the Lambert Field Shelter (the shelters that we will be staying at Fri and Sat)..

In addition there is a water source at the Cambell shelter just north of McAfee Knob.
