I am unable to afford a NEW BIKE but I do have my daughters mountain bike (sadly still brand new after 4 years)
I was thinking biking might be good as a low impact for my knees
but worry that a mountain bike might be to heavy. I have tried to bike with it but I was very sore after. But I do not know if it is because of the lack of biking or a heavy bike.
anyone have an extra 10 speed?
:)

One thing you can do if you are only riding pavement is to put road tires on it. They roll much easier on pavement than off road tires and are lighter.

Road tires will make it ride better on streets and sidewalks. Beware - biking uses entirely different muscles - and in different ways - than hiking, running or walking. Just coz you can hike all day doesn't mean that your in shape to go ride even 5 miles. Plus, that bike seat will be pretty uncomfy until you've gotten used to it.

Start out slow and your body will thank you and you'll enjoy it more.

But biking is a great cardio workout that doesn't abuse your knees. Go for it!

see roam that is what I am looking for. something that will not hurt the knees anymore then they already do.

so the weight of the bike is good then?
just change tires right?

Heavier than a road bike, but more durable. I commuted in Albuquerque with MTB+Road tires 13 miles each way. It works. Road bike is more fun, though, on pavement.
